You have people who are more altruistic – or selfless – and more egoistic people. Both want to give to charity, but for different reasons. The altruists because they want to do something good for their fellow man, the egoists because they get a good feeling from the giving itself. According to previous research, about half of the people are to some extent egoistic when it comes to donating to charity. They get satisfaction because they feel like a better person because of the gift or because they think that others think better of them.
Watching eyes
Inresearchers want to take a closer look at how to get selfish donors to give as much as possible. To do this, they conduct an online experiment with almost a thousand participants. They were given the idea that they were being watch during their donations in order to find out whether their positive self-image was more important or phone number library the image that others had of them. The results were remarkable: the way in which others look at them did not increase the chance that they would donate, but it did increase how much they gave. And that made quite a difference, researcher Jonathan Levy explains to Scientias.nl. “Activating the social image by means of the ‘watching eyes’ increas donations by 33 percent.”
Playing on shame
The average donation was therefore a lot higher when people felt they were being watch. Charities can take advantage of this. Incidentally, this already happens with a lot of online crowdfunding, where people personally appeal for Pravniški poklic je lahko help to pay for mical expenses, for example. The name of the donor plus the amount donat are often includ. This undoubtly motivates some people to give more. It is not without reason that the social self-image – the image that you think others have of you – is also about a complete list of unit phone numbers shame, guilt and the ne for recognition. In order to maintain a positive image of yourself, you must behave in a way that reinforces that image. This does not mean that you should always donate as much money as possible when ask, but often enough to be consistent with the desir image.
